Presentation
Want to discover a treasure? Come and escape to the Domain of Mariemont, an important place in European history, in Belgian Hainaut.
As you enter this 45-hectare park, you will discover magnificent trees, some of which are over a hundred years old, a rose garden, sculptures by well-known 19th and 20th century artists, the ruins of an 18th century palace, scenery built around water features and other surprises.
At the heart of this English-style park stands a modern building: the Royal Museum of Mariemont, a Museum of Art, History and Antiquity, which takes you from Egypt and Ancient Greece to Hainaut, via China and Gaul. An Egyptian mummy is on display alongside Roman frescoes, a smiling Buddha, Gallo-Roman jewellery, Tournai porcelain and a Japanese tea pavilion.
Most of the objects in the permanent collection were collected by Raoul Warocqué, a wealthy industrialist who worked in the coal industry in the 19th century. He had a passion for art, antiquity, books, education and history. At the beginning of the 20th century, without an heir, he bequeathed his collections, his castle and his park to the Belgian state.
The museum continues to enrich its collections and presents temporary exhibitions that highlight and question cultures from around the world.
Good news: access to the park and the permanent collections is free!
Don't hesitate: come and discover the park, which is wonderful in all seasons, and be surprised by the diversity of the works on display at the Museum.
Opening : Open all year round, Tuesday to Sunday and on holiday Mondays; April to September: 10 am to 6 pm and October to March: 10 am to 5 pm.
